Keren Project: Smart Home with AI

The Concept

During my senior year of high school, my partner Emil and I embarked on what would become our first significant IoT project. We called it “Keren Project” -a smart home system with artificial intelligence at its core.

This wasn’t just another home automation project. We wanted to build something that could learn from user behavior, adapt to patterns, and make intelligent decisions about energy usage, security, and comfort.

Building the System

Working after school and on weekends, we designed and built a complete smart home prototype from scratch. The system integrated:

• Custom hardware sensors and controllers
• Machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition
• A unified control interface
• Automated decision-making based on learned behaviors

Intel ISEF Competition

The project caught the attention of competition organizers, and we were accepted to compete at Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) 2015 -one of the world’s largest pre-college science competitions.

We made it to the finals, presenting our work alongside hundreds of talented students from around the globe. The experience was transformative: it showed us that we could compete at an international level and that our ideas had real potential.

What This Taught Me

Keren Project was my introduction to:

• IoT architecture and design
• Hardware-software integration
• Machine learning fundamentals
• Product development from concept to prototype
• Presenting technical work to judges and audiences

More importantly, it taught me that I could take an idea from my head and turn it into a working system. This project planted the seed for everything that came after -every IoT company I would build, every product I would ship.

Looking back, this was the moment I became a builder.
